Bali isn't one destination but several — the beach clubs of the south, the yoga-and-rice-terrace scene around Ubud, and the quiet coasts of the east and north. A good Bali itinerary picks two or three bases rather than a new hotel every night, because the island's traffic makes short distances take hours. Build in downtime; the point is to slow down.
Top things to do in Bali
Ubud
The cultural heart — Tegalalang rice terraces, the Monkey Forest, art markets, and jungle spas.
Uluwatu
Clifftop temple with a sunset Kecak fire dance and some of the island's best surf.
Sidemen & the east
The Ubud of a decade ago — terraced valleys, few tourists, and views of Mount Agung.
Nusa Penida day trip
Kelingking's dinosaur-shaped cliff and snorkeling with manta rays, a fast-boat ride away.
Sample Bali itinerary
Days 1–3 · Ubud
Rice terraces, temple visits, a waterfall or two, and a cooking class or spa day.
Days 4–5 · South coast
Uluwatu temple and surf, Canggu beach clubs, and sunset seafood at Jimbaran.
Days 6–7 · Islands or east
A Nusa Penida day trip, or slow days in Sidemen away from the crowds.
Bali travel tips
- ✓Hire a private driver for full-day trips — it's inexpensive and far less stressful than scooter traffic.
- ✓Carry a sarong for temple visits, or rent one at the entrance.
- ✓Distances are short but slow; don't plan more than one main area per day.
- ✓Use bottled or filtered water, and agree on Grab/Gojek fares before you ride.
Bali trip planning FAQ
How many days do you need in Bali?
Seven to ten days lets you base in two or three areas — Ubud plus the south coast, with an island day trip — without spending your whole trip in traffic.
When is the best time to visit Bali?
The dry season from April to October, with May, June, and September offering good weather and fewer crowds than the July–August peak.
Is it better to stay in Ubud or the beach?
Both — Ubud for culture, rice terraces, and wellness; the south (Uluwatu, Canggu, Seminyak) for beaches, surf, and nightlife. Splitting your stay is ideal.
